In this article discuss Marine Loading Arm Types
Marine Loading / unloading arms are used to transfer liquids from liquid carrier ships to the jetty, and then the liquid will transfer via pipelines from the jetty to the storage tank area or from a tank to liquid carrier ship.
Marine Loading Arm Types
Basically, the loading/unloading arms are classified as four types.
- Fully Balanced Marine Arm
- Double Counterweight Marine Arm
- Rotary Counterweight Marine Arm
Fully Balanced Marine Arm (FBMA)
The Fully Balanced Marine Arm is fully balanced in the empty condition. These types have a simple structure using two counterweights.
- Main counterweight and
These counterweights will ensure full balance in all positions. The main counterweight is used attached to the inboard arm and the sub-counterweight is attached to the outboard arm. These can be operated with few personnel, and have an easy-to-maintain structure. As a result, these are the most commonly used type of marine loading arms.
Rotary Counterweight Marine Arm (RCMA)
The Rotary Counterweight Marine Arm is also fully balanced in all positions when empty. These are used mainly in loading and unloading medium to large tankers. Today, RCMA are widely used in LNG terminals. RCMA uses a single counterweight to balance both inboard and outboard arms simultaneously (Refer figure).
The counterweights, assembled on the beam interdependent of the lower pulley. The pantograph sheave and pantograph cable to transfer movement from to inboard arm to outboard arm or vise-verse. It required more space for counterweight movement.
Double Counterweighted Marine Arm (DCMA)
The DCMA loading arm uses two independent counterweights, as well as a pantograph to ensure full balance in all positions. Separate counterweights are used to balance the inboard and outboard sections of the arm. The outboard counterweights are assembled on a beam, fixed to an idler sheave which rotates around the same horizontal axis as the trunnion removal elbow (style 50 swivel joint). The rotations are adjusted to balance the outboard arm through a pantograph cable to a second sheave which is fixed to the outboard arm at the Apex removal elbow (style 40 swivel joint). The inboard counterweights are fixed to the inboard counterweight extension beam and adjusted to assure correct balancing of the loading arm assembly.
A feature of the DCMA is a smaller area required for rear counterweight movement than with the RCMA. This type of counter weight is widely used for loading and unloading very large tankers.
Marine loading arms are used to take the movements such as high tide, low tide, transfer movement of ships, ocean currents, etc.,
